Short answer
Auction photos typically include 10–30 images and show the main damage well. Hidden damage appears in small details: uneven panel gaps, different color tone, misaligned wheels, lit warning lights on the dashboard. You need to zoom in on each photo and examine it systematically.
Kuzov
- Panel gaps: The space between the door, hood, and trunk should be equal on both sides. A difference indicates either previous repair or a bent frame.
- Color tone: Color variation between adjacent panels indicates previous repainting.
- Radiator frame: If the frame under the hood is bent from a front impact, the damage is deeper than it appears.
- Pillars and roof waves: Signs of side impact or rollover.
Wheels and suspension
If a wheel stands crooked compared to others or is pulled forward or backward, the suspension arm, half-shaft, or frame may be damaged. This is expensive repair and often goes unnoticed in photos.
Salon
- Dashboard warning lights: Airbag (SRS), engine, ABS lights on?
- Deployed airbags and pulled seat belts — detailed article.
- Water marks and rust — Signs of flood.
Engine bay
Fluid leaks, broken reinforcements, displaced radiator and AC condenser reveal the true extent of front impact damage. On modern vehicles, the radar and sensors behind the bumper also need replacement — ADAS repair.
If photos are scarce
If there are no images of the bottom, interior, or engine, that's a red flag in itself. In such cases, you can request a video (available on some lots), a 360° view, or a local inspection. Keep your maximum bid low for lots you're unsure about — How it's calculated.
