What is a VIN code?

VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a unique 17-character number assigned to each car at the factory. No two cars can have the same VIN. From this number you can determine the car's country of manufacture, brand, model, year, and engine.

Where is the VIN code written?

  • Bottom left corner of the front windshield (read from outside)
  • On a label on the door frame pillar
  • In the car's documents (technical passport, title)
  • In the auction listing — Copart and IAAI show the VIN for each lot

What does this check show and not show?

The free check above uses the open database of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and shows the car's factory data : year, brand, model, body type, engine, fuel, transmission, country of manufacture.

Accident history, mileage records, and insurance claims are not included in this check — paid reports are needed for those. We perform this check before buying a car from the auction.
