Short answer
Modern cars have driver assistance system (ADAS) radars, cameras and sensors behind the bumper, radiator grille and windshield. Even a minor front collision can damage these components. Replacing them and then calibrating them significantly increases repair costs.
What is ADAS and where is it located?
- Front radar: adaptive cruise and automatic braking; usually behind the emblem or bumper.
- Windshield camera: lane keeping, sign recognition; next to the interior mirror.
- Side radars: blind spot warning; at the corners of the rear bumper.
- Park sensors and 360° cameras: on bumpers, mirrors.
Why is it expensive?
First, the parts themselves are costly. Second, after replacement, the system must be calibrated — it requires special equipment and expertise. When replacing the windshield, the camera must also be recalibrated. Without calibration, systems may malfunction or not work at all.
What to check in an auction lot?
- Whether the emblem, grille and internal parts are intact after a front collision.
- A crack in the windshield — may need to be replaced along with the camera unit.
- Dashboard warnings like "radar", "sensor", "front assist".
- On premium models (Range Rover, BMW, Mercedes), ADAS parts are especially expensive.
How to include it in the repair estimate?
On a modern car with front damage, add radar, camera and calibration costs separately to the repair estimate. We showed how this cost impacts the maximum bid. in this article For hidden damage signs: what to look for in auction photos.
